Hang your quilt in 4 simple steps
Wondering how to hang a large quilt? Here’s a simple 4-step method using a wooden dowel and a hanging sleeve.
What you’ll need.
Wooden dowel*
Saw and sandpaper
Hammer
1 or 2 nails
Tape measure
*I use 12mm pine dowels from Builder Depot, but most hardware stores carry similar options. You can buy them full-length or ask staff to cut them to size. These instructions include how to cut the dowel yourself.
Measure and cut the dowel.
Measure the width of your quilt to determine how long your dowel needs to be. Mark the measurement with a pencil, cut it with a saw, and smooth any rough edges using sandpaper.
Prepare the quilt for display.
Lightly press the quilt to remove creases—if using steam, opt for deionised water. Use a lint roller to pick up any dust. Then, slide the dowel through the hanging sleeve on the back of the quilt.
Prepare your wall fixture.
Decide where you'd like to hang your quilt and mark the spot. For smaller quilts, one nail may be enough; for larger ones, use two and a spirit level to keep things straight. Hammer the nail(s) into place.
Hang your quilt, stand back, and admire!
Place the dowel on the nail(s), step back, and admire your handywork! Quilt wall hangings are easy to remove, reposition, or use as cosy throws.
